I may or may not have tried to interrogate my waitress to find out how the chef gets the meat so incredibly tender!
Right near Washington Square park, Favela Cubana is the perfect lunch spot and offers some tender and flavorful meat dishes.
First, since I was on vacation (but also, why not), I tried their Mama Margarita (tequila, tiple sec, fresh lime juice & guava necter) that was as tasty as it looks:
For appetizers I tried both their beef empanadas and chorizo croquettes. They both came with a yummy sauce, which I appreciated because I'm all about the condiments. I would get the empanadas and if you're looking for a little bit of that spicy, cheesy taste then go with the croquettes:
They also have fried calamari on their menu, which would be your standard appetizer except it came with large, fried shrimp and pickled red onions that added a nice contrasting taste:
What they're definitely known for is their Lechón (braised, pulled pork shoulder) and Ropa Vieja (braised, pulled skirt steak) dishes served with the traditional black beans and white rice (bonus...the pork came with a plaintain!).
They were both amazing, I actually took my leftover pork home and had it the next day on a sandwich with some spicy mayo and pickled onions!
Personally, I preferred the steak because the flavors that were going on were really exciting--it comes in a tomato, pepper and onion sauce. And I just couldn't get over how tender this steak was:
I know I keep talking about the meat here, but they also had a really unique tasting mussles dish that was in this semi-sweet white wine and garlic sauce with chorizo, and two pieces of grilled Cuban bread to soak it all up!
My absolute favorite was the Grilled Hanger steak sandwich. Seriously all...this meat was so tender I actually tried to ask my waitress if and for how long they marinate this steak for (no shame)! As I'm writing this I swear my mouth is watering all over again.
Accompanying the hanger steak is asiago cheese, pickled onions, arugula and a horseradish aioli. I will be back for this bad boy and so should you:
Definitely recommend this spot. They have a sectioned off outdoor eating area as well so as soon as this week of cold weather passes, it'll be the perfect time to go!
