Ok. Dumplings might be on my top 5 favorite foods--whether its soup dumplings, steamed or fried...I just love dumplings. With that said, I think I found the best fried dumplings in NYC!
I've been seeing The Mimi Cheng dumplings all over my social media and I had enough and needed to try these out myself. My initial reaction: I can't believe I waited so long to have this magical food moment with these dumplings.
When I walked in, you can see the kitchen behind the counter and watch the chefs actually prepare your dumplings. Right next to the register was a woman sitting there hand-making the dumplings! They weren't kidding about the "handmade everyday" boasted on their website.
I got the classic The Mimi Cheng, which are filled with chicken and veggies with the option of steamed or fried (GET THE FRIED!). I was surprised at both the reasonable pricing (6 dumplings for $8 or 8 for $10) and the rather large size of the dumplings. I got 8 dumplings--obviously--and this was the perfect size for my lunch.
They also have lots of vegetarian options like The Mighty Veggie which is filled with kale, zucchini, free-range egg, shiitake mushrooms and carrots:
All their dumplings have a seasoning of scallions and fresh ginger among other (secret) ingredients! To go with the dumplings is Mimi's Secret Sauce, which, as the name gives away, is a secret. Basically, it's a soy-sauce based sauce that married perfectly with the dumplings. There are also bottles of Sriracha on each table as well!
They just added to their menu a special new dumpling that was created in collaboration with Chef Chloe from her famous vegan restaurant by Chloe which resemble the black bean burger from by Chloe: black bean, sweet potato, quinoa stuffed with guacamole, beet ketchup and crispy tortilla strips on top. Served with it is a fresh corn salsa. They're only available this month so get 'em before they're gone!
Go. Just go:
