Looking for the perfect spot to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Head to The Taco Shop in West Village for some great margaritas, tacos and much more!
Tucked away down the stairs off West 4th street in West Village, The Taco Shop offers almost 10 different types of tacos (2 of which are vegetarian) and a variety of margarita flavors...you're sure to find something to love. My personal favorites were the guava margarita on ice with salt with their slow braised short rib taco!
They had a traditional margarita, guava, mango, and a spicy jalapeno -- all with the option of served frozen or on the rocks (with the additional option of a tasty, flavored salt!).
I instantly fell in love with their guava flavor:
And also their mango (frozen):
What's a dinner at a taco joint without starting with guacamole? Start with the guacamole. It comes with these huge, freshly made tortilla chips, which are great for sharing:
And then came the tacos. THE TACOS! I tried 6 different varieties of tacos. Sorry vegetarian friends...I skipped the veggie options and went right for the meat and fish!
Pictured below are the Baja Fish Taco, Beef Barbaco Taco, Chicken Tinga Taco, Pork Belly Taco, Spicy Chorizo Taco, and the Steak Taco:
All of their tacos are served on fresh tortillas and in addition to any special toppings, they all get the classic fresh cilantro and onions. The Taco Shop also has 3 different salsas to add that range from mild to spicy (I like the spiciest one)!
Their Baja Fish Taco features their catch of the day in a Negra Modelo beer batter with a chipotle slaw. They were perfectly fried and didn't have an overwhelming fish taste:
My all-time favorite, which I highly recommend, was the Beef Barbaco Taco: slow braised short ribs with avocado leaf. I'm a sucker for braised meat and these were no exception. When I go back next time, I'm definitely ordering at least 3 of these just for myself:
My second runner up was the Steak Taco -- a skirt steak, marinated in their special dry rub.
Other great taco options were the Chicken Tinga tacos with an 8-spice rub in a tomato chipotle stew, the Pork Belly topped with jalapeño pickled red onions, and the Spicy Chorizo made from their homemade Spanish sausage with paprika and ancho chile.
Not only does The Taco Shop serve up a great selection of tacos, but they have noteworthy sides and what they call "Non-Taco" items!
The simple quesadilla was really fantastic--grilled on the outside and filled with a salty, melted oaxaca cheese (similar texture to fresh mozzarella but with more of a Monterey Jack flavor!). Served simply with sour cream and priced well at just $3.50 for two fairly large pieces it makes for a great compliment to all those tacos:
And don't forget your side dishes people!!
Pictured left to right: plantains, chipotle slaw, and their grilled corn with lime, cayenne and cotija cheese:
Each taco comes in at a reasonable $3.50 and if you come in for happy hour (which you should!) then you can get a margarita or beer (get the margarita!) plus 3 tacos for only $12...hard to beat that!
Go try out their different flavored margaritas and 9 different tacos--and don't forget that quesadilla.
